The Library has been established as a specialized library, of the semi-open type, primarily for the research of the employees of the Unit of the Croatian Institute of History. For the most part the Library holdings consist of books, journals and other periodical materials on national history and related areas, and of comparable foreign literature.
The Library holdings have some 10,000 book titles and more than 500 titles of various periodicals. Since June 2003 one graduate librarian has been employed and since then the organization of a computer catalogue has been carried out; the Library catalogue is being updated and renewed and records of periodicals are being updated. In addition to regular Library processing activities and the purchase and lending of books, the Library conducts book and journal exchange with 83 institutions in Croatia and foreign countries.
The Unit’s librarian is Tatjana Melnik.
Opening hours are from Monday to Friday from 8 a. m. till 4 p. m..
The Library is open to users outside the institution on working days from 9 a. m. till 3 p. m.
Membership is free of charge.
Books can be borrowed for up to 30 days.
Serial publications, reference materials and valuable books, held in one copy, cannot be used outside the Library. Master’s and doctoral theses can be borrowed under special conditions. If a user destroys or loses any of the books, he or she is obliged to purchase a new copy.
Although the Library has no books pre-dating the 19th century (the oldest book of the Library was printed in 1840), it is worth mentioning that it holds a considerable number of rare book titles and editions that cannot now be purchased and that are rarely available in Croatian libraries. This mainly refers to Croatian and foreign history books, but also to books from other humanistic disciplines.
